The Ann Arbor YMCA has been awarded an $80,000 grant from The Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF) and Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation through the new Regional Sports 4 Life program to fund the Young Women Making Waves Program, a swim program for underserved girls in eastern Washtenaw County. The program operates two to three days a week, 35 weeks during the school year and six weeks during the summer. Participants enroll for a 12-month season with a curriculum that begins with basic water safety skills for new swimmers and progresses participation in competitive swimming. Strong swimmers that are 16 years of age or older will be invited to attend lifeguard trainings, and after certification, will be eligible to apply for part-time employment in lifeguard positions at the Y.
