YMCA Offers Free Swim Lessons This Summer

The YMCA is making available “Free Safety Around Water—YMCA Camp Birkett” classes for children in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti and Pickney this summer.

YMCA instruction includes basic stroke knowledge and safety at pools, beaches, waterparks, lakes, and/or boating.

While swim lessons may not be in everyone’s budget, this free option makes them available to all.

In Ann Arbor, children ages 3 to 12 may register now for classes being held from June 24-28 at the YMCA Downtown Membership Branch at 400 West Washington Street, Ann Arbor.

Registration for Ypsilanti-based classes opens on June 24 for “YMCA Camp Birkett.” The classes are for children ages 3 to 12 years old and will run in July and August at many McKinley Properties across Washtenaw County, from July to August. These locations include Eastern Michigan University, Golfside Lake Apartments, Roundtree Apartments and Schooner Apartments.

Pickney-area classes run August 19-August 23 and August 26-August 30. Registration is now open at YMCA Camp Birkett, 9141 Dexter Townhall Road, Pickney. These Pickney-area classes have a special safety focus that includes bathing and lakefront safety.

Experts agree that there are many reasons for children to learn to swim, including safety, physical health, mental health and developmental benefits. Perhaps first and foremost, children need to know how to swim to prevent drowning for themselves and others. Swimming can provide lifelong physical activity to maintain healthy exercise, as well as social skills and coordination.
