Trails Edge is a summer camp for children with special needs. Held in conjunction with the University of Michigan’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital the camp is currently ready to open their 22nd season. Trail’s Edge offers children ages five to 18 an opportunity to participate in horseback riding, arts and crafts, fishing, archery and more. “The kids are just extraordinary,” says Mary Buschell, camp director. The camp is offered free of charge to families and runs solely with the help of volunteers. “Most of our volunteers are medical professionals or students seeking a degree in the medical field,” says Buschell. “I can’t even describe the quality of our volunteers, we’re able to provide up to three volunteers per child. Someone is available to care for campers at night if necessary and each camper has at least one partner during the day,” says Buschell. Camp is held each year at the Fowler Center for Outdoor Learning in Mayville, 30 miles north of Lapeer from June 5 to June 10.
