First Words

. January 24, 2013.

The FIRST WORDS research project represents a collaborative effort between the University of Michigan Autism and Communication Disorders Center (UMACC) and the Florida State University Department of Communication Disorders. The goal of this research study is to identify tools to improve the screening and referral processes of young children with communication delays or autism spectrum disorders. Recently, the Center has begun to recruit children from 18 to 24 months of age who are walking for the FIRST WORDS Project. Families must live within a two-hour driving distance from Ann Arbor. Families who are interested in participating will be asked to complete a comprehensive evaluation
to assist in identifying language delays or possible autism spectrum disorders. In addition, the study will videotape families interacting with their child for one hour at their home. Families receive gift cards for their participation and all services associated with the study are provided at no cost.
