Youths listen when they receive advice from others their age. The Corner Health Center in Ypsilanti knows this all too well and utilizes their Theatre Troupe/Peer Education Project to get the message across. The prevention program promotes discussion and understanding of sensitive topics such as substance abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, depression and dating violence, by using local teens’ presentations to educate their peer audiences. A trained health educator and actor/playwright meets with the Theatre Troupe, directing the teens to draw from their own insights and experiences to create presentations that spread awareness and prevention messages. The interactive program takes place over several weeks culminating with a performance preceded by reality and skill building workshops. Troupe members meet once per week and perform shows throughout Southeast Michigan.
