It’s the year 2020 and let’s face it, finding one’s emotional center is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Today you can’t throw a foam block in Ann Arbor without hitting a yoga studio. But it wasn’t always this way; back in 2003, Ana Hough, who successfully used yoga to treat a severe case of scoliosis, founded A2 Yoga at 2030 Commerce Blvd. on the west side of town.
Subsequent years found the flexible trend becoming grounded, and in 2013, Hough sold the thriving business to her sister Dena, who in 2019 opened an additional east side location at 2310 E. Stadium, a few doors down from Trader Joe’s.
Dena sold the business back to her sister in 2019, and then visited India when word of a highly-contagious virus began to circulate. Citizens and officials on the Asian subcontinent were hopeful that the warm climate would help to curb the impact of what would soon be known as Covid-19. Dena’s experience of being in a populous region during the public outbreak made her acutely aware of the complications that could arise if urban areas such as New York City and Detroit began to report cases.
Dena returned home, safe and healthy, with an understanding that factors including Detroit’s busting border, the auto industry, international flights touching down at Detroit Metro Airport and international students traveling to the University of Michigan from all across the globe, could create a struggle in Ann Arbor, similar to the one she witnessed in India..
That prediction, of course, was all too accurate, and when Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued the shelter-in-place order on March 24, both A2 Yoga studios closed their doors.
As with many other small business owners doing their best to navigate these uncharted waters, A2 Yoga has been fluid in adapting. In lieu of studio classes, Ana is offering virtual classes via webcam. This, of course, poses an entirely new set of challenges, such as making certain that liability insurance covers potential injuries incurred during online classes. Today, and when the day eventually comes where things are “back to normal”, A2 Yoga is in the perfect space to help you to reclaim your inner-peace.
