How Chelsea’s new park is going to benefit parents

When my partner and I made the choice to move to Michigan, Chelsea caught our eye right away. This small town has a wonderful community, with an abundance of events to keep you and your children entertained. Since settling in, we’ve been so happy with how welcoming and kind the community has been.

We moved near downtown, and were very excited to learn that the lot near our house was being turned into a park. Main Street Park has an alliance that is working incredibly hard to make this amazing park a reality. The picture below highlights their plans, which include multiple courts, climbing walls, a skate park and an open lawn.

The park features hammocks, a rose garden, a percussion section and a play structure, making it the most dynamic park in the area. Much of its funds are donated by locals, and the designs were discussed thoroughly with middle and high school students. According to their website, every single person in the park alliance is a volunteer. And they are even asking for mural artists to add unique art that celebrates community coming together. The park, a true example of community, is expected to be completed in 2026.

Since I live quite close, I’ve had the pleasure of watching it come together. I’ve seen them place structures, dig, and make plans within the lot, which only adds to the excitement. The approved park plans are something I review often and compare with what I’m seeing. While Chelsea is already an amazing place, it’s clear this park will be incredible for parents in Washtenaw County.

Many parks in the area cater to a certain age group. This unique park will grow with your child. Your little one could start in the play structure and enjoy moments in the open lawn, move on to the climbing walls and eventually enjoy the courts and skate park. There will be bike racks, tables, and plenty of open spaces where parents can take a break. It’s in a great location as well, only a few streets from downtown and located near the library, which makes it an easy stop on the way to wherever you’re going.

One thing that stood out to me was the inclusion of disability in their designs. You can see multiple people in wheelchairs in their rendering, which means they are highly considering making sure there are multiple areas that are accessible, which is huge for me as a disabled mom.

I will follow up with more information once the park is open, but for now, the glimpses I get as I walk by are enough to keep me entranced.
