New and Classic Kid-Friendly Movies in Theatre this June

Headed to the theaters with the whole family this summer? Check out new releases and classics on the big screen at these Washtenaw County movie theaters. 

June 12 release, “How to Train Your Dragon (2025),” All Theaters

“How to Train Your Dragon” is getting a live-action remake of the original 2010 film. The original movie was based on a book under the same title and follows a Viking teen who befriends a dragon during a conflict between humans and dragons.

June 12, “The Spongebob Movie: Sponge out of Water (2015),” Cinemark Ann Arbor

“Sponge Out of Water” is the second SpongeBob movie in theaters, preceding a 2020 theatrical and streaming release and a 2024 release exclusively on Netflix. This film follows the Bikini Bottom crew on a mission to retrieve the stolen secret formula from our world above water. The fifth SpongeBob movie installment, “Search for SquarePants,” will be released in theaters on December 19, 2025. 

June 15, “Lu over the Wall, 夜明け告げるルーのうた (2017),” Michigan Theatre 

“Lu Over the Wall,” released in Japan in 2017, follows a musical teen who joins a band in his new small town and attracts a mermaid whose voice compels humans to dance. This English-dubbed showing is free and open to the public. Visit their website to reserve tickets. 

June 20-26, “The Garfield Movie (2024),” Emagine Saline

The Garfield Movie is the third Garfield movie released in theaters, or the sixth in total, including 3 DVD releases. The film shows the famous orange cat’s reunion with his estranged father, who convinces him to go on a heist. 

June 22-24, “The Secret World of Arrietty (2010),” Cinemark Ann Arbor, Emagine Saline

Studio Ghibli’s 16th movie is titled Arrietty the Borrower, 借りぐらしのアリエッティ, in Japan, a nod to the book “The Borrowers,” which the story was adapted from. In the film, a four-inch-tall borrower family lives in the floorboards of a rural home and has no problem staying hidden until a friendship forms between the human family’s son and the borrower’s daughter. The story will be dubbed in English. 

June 25 & 26, “Shrek 2 (2004),” Cinemark Ann Arbor

“Shrek 2” was the highest-grossing animated film until “Toy Story 3″ was released in 2010. The series is loosely based on a book named “Shrek!” and picks up the plot after the first film. Shrek and Fiona’s relationship is tested when he meets her high-class parents, while Fairy Godmother works to break them up for her son, Prince Charming. “Shrek 5” is set to be released on December 23, 2026, 16 years after “Shrek 4.”
