Where to Watch Movies Under The Stars Around Ann Arbor This Summer

Looking to make the most of Michigan’s warm summer nights? From animated favorites to big-screen blockbusters, Washtenaw County is full of free and low-cost outdoor movie nights perfect for the whole family.

Whether you’re spreading a blanket on the grass or pulling up to a drive-in, here’s your guide to catching a movie under the stars in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Saline, Dexter — and even a little beyond.

Movies by Moonlight at Ann Arbor Summer Festival (A2SF)

From June 13–29, the Ann Arbor Summer Festival brings back its beloved Movies by Moonlight series, transforming Ingalls Mall into a pop-up open-air theater. Screenings begin at 9:30 p.m. and feature a lineup that includes “Toy Story,” “Inside Out 2,” “The Wild Robot” and “Wicked.” Bring a blanket and settle in for an evening of movies, food trucks, and live music — it’s a classic Ann Arbor summer experience.

WRAP Movie Nights at Frog Island Park (Ypsilanti)

Hosted by Home of New Vision, this Ypsi tradition brings the community together for monthly free movie nights at Frog Island Park. Expect a mix of recent releases and family-friendly classics, plus free popcorn, candy and soda. Movies begin at dusk — just grab your lawn chair and go.

Summer Drive-In at USA Hockey Arena (Plymouth)

Just outside Washtenaw County, the Summer Drive-In at USA Hockey Arena offers a nostalgic way to enjoy new releases. Running June 6 through August 31, the series features weekend double features, themed concessions and Friday Family Fun Nights — all from the comfort of your car.

Movies in the Parks – Metroparks Series

If you’re up for a little adventure beyond city limits, the Huron-Clinton Metroparks are hosting two outdoor movie nights this August, both featuring “The Wild Robot” on a bright LED screen. On Friday, August 8, head to Kensington Metropark’s Maple Beach, where the movie starts at 7:30 p.m., but families can come early to explore the playground, splash in Kent Lake, or stroll the Hike-Bike Trail. Then on Saturday, August 9, the fun continues at Lower Huron Metropark’s Woods Creek area, with crafts and games kicking off at 6 p.m. thanks to Van Buren Parks and Recreation. Whether you’re spreading out on the grass or wandering the trails while you wait, both events offer a relaxed, all-ages way to enjoy a summer evening outdoors—and a great story under the stars.
