Lunar New Year Celebrations in Ann Arbor

The Lunar New Year begins on January 29. This year, we are saying goodbye to the Year of the Dragon and hello to the Year of the Snake. Here are some local events you won’t want to miss:

Saturday, Jan. 11

Clay Chinese Lions with Artist Lyla Wang
2–3:30 p.m.
Malletts Creek Branch Library, 3090 E Eisenhower Pkwy, Ann Arbor

Attendees will be invited to create their own beautiful Chinese lion figurine using air-dry clay. Local artist Lyla Wang will provide in-person guidance on how to shape and decorate these creatures.


Saturday, Jan. 25

AADL Welcome Chinese New Year Celebration with Ann-Hua Chinese School
1-3 p.m.
Downtown Branch of the Ann Arbor District Library, First Floor, 343 S 5th Ave, Ann Arbor

Come celebrate with a lion dance, drumming, and folk dance performances. Participants will also be invited to try a Chinese “Yaogu” drum, make crafts, and take home a tasty traditional Chinese treat.

Wednesday, Jan. 29

ECE Lunar New Year Celebration
1:30-3 p.m.
EECS Atrium, University of Michigan, North Campus

This event is free and open to the public. Participants will learn more about the history and traditions of the Lunar New Year. The event will include live music, a calligraphy artist and food demonstrations.

Saturday, Feb. 8

Briarwood Mall’s Annual Lunar New Year Celebration
12-4 p.m.
Briarwood Mall, 100 Briarwood Cir, Ann Arbor

At noon, the Dragon and Lion parade will kick off the festivities, followed by martial arts, tai chi, drumming and folk dance performances. From 2-4 p.m., join in for crafts in the Macy’s wing, which will include Chinese calligraphy.
