It has been so incredibly hot these past few weeks, and it’s officially lake season, which is a Michigan right of passage. It’s the absolute best summer activity and a great way to cool off in this dreadful heat. If you’re looking for an awesome place to swim, fish, or simply stare out into the beautiful Michigan water, look no further.
Gallup Park
If you enjoy walking on scenic trails, dipping your feet in clear water, or finding a place to set up and swim for a while, you should go to Gallup Park. There’s a great playground to take your kids too, and over 69-acres of greenery to lose yourself in. You can rent canoes, paddle boards or kayaks and travel leisurely over the water.
Whitmore lake
For an eventful lake day where you spend most of it swimming in the water and eating with friends, this is a great option. Whitmore has some private areas and is more known for boating and water sports, but there are some great beaches as well.

Waterloo Recreational Center
Waterloo has a lot of trees and shade, and a wider range of area for swimmers. It can get pretty popular around holidays, but you’ll absolutely be able to grab a spot in the grass.
Independence Lake Park
Independence Lake Park is a great family destination. Blue Heron Spray Park is amazing for kids up to age 12, with concessions and even rentals available. There’s also launch sites for canoes, boat rentals for those with licenses, and multiple swimming locations.
Pinckney Recreational Area
Chelsea has a great lake guide that I’ve used repeatedly. I’m especially in love with the Pinckney Recreational Area off Halfmoon lake and Silver lake. It’s got grills, a volleyball court, and benches near the water. It’s never too popular, either, which makes it ideal. It’s about 15 minutes from Chelsea, Michigan. The swimming area is smaller, but I’ve never had an issue with overcrowding when I went there.
Argo Cascades
If you’re a bit more adventurous, you should try white water rafting or tubing this summer. It’s one of the best experiences out there, and if you have your own tube, you can go for free. There are multiple routes you can take so it never gets boring.
Blind Lake
If you’re more of a hiker, Blind Lake is the one for you. It’s a campground with multiple trails and beautiful views of the water. This one is particularly popular with dog owners.
Other lakes for fishing
Lastly, if you’re more of a fisher, check out Cavanaugh Lake Park, Cedar Lake or Pierce Lake. Pierce Lake is also great for bird watching, and there’s docks you can sit on. I’ve been there before to hunt for birds and frogs, and it’s idealistic..
