It has been a goal of mine to do more crafts with my 2-year-old at home. I can tell she really enjoys them and I have been loving displaying her creations around the house. Halloween is an especially a fun time to do crafts with your little ones and there are so many creative ideas out there.
This month, we made jack-o’-lanterns with coffee filters and construction paper, or as my toddler referred to it, “Mr. Pumpkin Guy.”
It passed the test on my main requirements for a good craft:
- encouraged creative expression
- Caught my 2-year old’s attention
- Low effort set-up and it did not require any artistic skills from me
- I didn’t have to buy anything since I already had everything at home!
Materials

- Coffee filters
- Markers
- Spray bottle filled with water
- Construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue
How to make it!
Step 1: Draw on coffee filters with marker. This is a great activity for little ones who love to scribble!

Step 2: Spray water on coffee filter. Any type of stray bottle or dropper will work. We let our 2-year-old do this part and we only got a little wet…

Step 3: Let dry. We waited overnight but it should be dry in a couple hours. Make sure they are weighted down if you dry them outside.

Step 4: Cut out shapes of construction paper. I did this part for my toddler, however, this is certainly a step that older kids can take on!

Step 5: Glue shapes to coffee filter to make a spooky face and a stem. Have fun with it! After a couple tries, I could tell my toddler was getting a hang of it.

Step 6: Let dry. This depends on what type of glue you used. We used liquid so it took a little longer than if we had used a glue stick.
Step 7: Hang on a window to display your cute and spooky craft!

Now its your turn!
Make it at home and share with us a picture of your creation!
