Inclusive Ann Arbor
I absolutely love hiking on trails. In the fall, I get to watch the leaves changing colors, during the winter, I get to see the beautiful snowscape, and in summer and spring, the glistening lakes. As a disabled parent, I am always looking for accessible trails near me. I use a stroller for my daughter, and am an ambulatory wheelchair user, and often rely on one of my mobility aids for at least a portion of my hikes.
B2B Trail
Parker Mill County Park has paved trails, including my favorite trail in Washtenaw County, the Border to Border trail. I have not gone on every inch of this trail, but so far I’ve found it to be quite accessible.
It has wide, paved paths, which I have found to be easy to navigate, and it’s primarily a flat trail. Many recommend the area between Dexter and Ann Arbor, but I’ve also heard the Hudson Mills Park Loop is quite enjoyable.
Matthaei Trail
I’ve also spent a lot of time on the Matthaei Botanical Gardens Trail. It does tend to have a lot of bikers, so I stay more alert on this one, but it’s really enjoyable and there are a lot of beautiful florals.
All trails has a list of accessible trails that they recommend. Some of the highlights include the Ramble Trail, which has an accessible path and water views, and the Lillie Park South Trails Loop, which I haven’t been able to try yet and can’t wait to.
Gallup Loop
One that everyone seems to adore is the Gallup Park and Furstenberg Loop. This area is supposed to be great for watching wildlife and there is even an ecosystem map, which shows wetlands, meadows and even a lagoon. Much of this park is accessible, including the Canoes and playground, according to Destination Ann Arbor.
More options
The Washtenaw County site has a few more for you, including Independence Lake, Osborne Mill Preserve and Rolling Hills. Some are completely accessible, while others have accessible areas rather than entire parks or trails, so I’d recommend reviewing the sites before a visit. Of these, I really enjoyed Independence Lake. It has a wide, open path and beautiful views.
I’m sure there are even more trails I’ll find and adore, but these are the ones that have stood out to me! If you’re new to this, I’d start with a short trail like Matthaei, or a portion of the B2B trail. Happy hiking!
