Chelsea is the place to be over the summer. There are a number of amazing (and mostly free!) events to take part in. I moved here last year during the summer, so I’m itching to get to participate in all these awesome activities again, and this time with my daughter! There are a lot of small events and festivities that you can find outlined on their calendar, and a couple main ones that everyone has heard of.
Sounds & Sights
Every Thursday during the summer in Chelsea during the summer there is Sounds and Sights. There are ten stages with free music and entertainment. In some areas, chairs or benches are provided and there are even food trucks. And it’s not just music. According to the Chelsea experience guide, “Kids will enjoy acts like magicians, circus acts, jugglers, face painters, balloon artists, the ‘How to Chalk’ themed art stage and much more. While music enthusiasts will experience many genres of music all in one night – bluegrass, americana, folk, rock, Celtic, blues, jazz, country and everything in between.”
This all comes together in a huge festival that you absolutely can’t miss on July 24-26. This has a car show, Kid Zone, Chalk Art, Art Market, Teen Zone, Farmer’s Market, Music, Food, and more. If you’re only able to attend one event this summer, it has to be this one. There is so much to do for kids and teens of all ages, and it’s a great community gathering.
Annual Chelsea Golf Outing
This golf outing is a fundraiser and an opportunity to connect with business owners. You do have to pay for this event, unlike the others mentioned so far, but it’s meant to support the chamber of commerce. You can sponsor, or simply golf, based on your own needs within the community.

Other community events
There are a number of smaller events, but I’d like to highlight a few that I’m particularly excited about.
Educational events
The Chelsea District Library is hosting an event called, “Envisioning a Dementia-Friendly Community.” I adore events that give back to the community, and this is an amazing way to help contribute to making our community more friendly to those suffering from dementia. If you’re interested, you can register here.
Another educational event that I’m anticipating is the Where Can We Live in Peace? [Documentary Screening & Discussion]. This documentary follows a migrant center, and according to the event page, “the film offers an intimate and deeply humanizing portrait of people on one of the world’s most dangerous journeys, and of the extraordinary compassion that meets them along the way.”
If interested, you can register here.
Animal events
If you’re an animal lover, you can learn about the Michigan Birds of Prey on May 17 at the Waterloo Recreation Center, join your first bird watching event in June 7and even learn more about how to handle and photograph beautiful Michigan snakes on June 14.
Walking events
Lastly, if you’re looking for motivation to get up and walk or run, Chelsea has your back. You can support Vets by joining the Trek for Vets on May 22, a 1.4 mile walk that passes through Chelsea, or you can knock a 5k off your bucket list with the Couch to 5k completely free nine week training.
Chelsea’s website makes sure to highlight events nearby as well, such as candle making and beer classes, book clubs, art parties, and more. I hope to see you around Chelsea in the upcoming months!
