Hebrew Day School of Ann Arbor Celebrates Half a Century

Hebrew Day School of Ann Arbor recently celebrated its 50th anniversary with a special gala event, highlighting five decades of educational excellence and community impact. Close to 300 people attended the celebration, including original founding families, alumni representing each decade, current students and educators, and supporters who traveled from across the country and abroad. The evening honored the school’s longstanding role in shaping Jewish education in Michigan and beyond.

“For 50 years, Hebrew Day School has been a cornerstone of Jewish life and learning in Ann Arbor. This extraordinary evening of cherishing our roots, celebrating our connections, and looking forward to a bright future was deeply moving for everyone involved,” said Rav Will Keller, head of school and proud parent of three HDS students, in a press release.

The evening included heartfelt tributes and special recognitions honoring individuals who exemplify the values and mission of Hebrew Day School. Eve and Richard Primus were presented with the Dedicated Leaders Award in acknowledgment of their visionary leadership and unwavering support for the school’s development and vitality. Distinguished Alumni Awards were given to brothers Ari and Robert Axelrod, celebrating both their personal achievements and the enduring impact of their HDS education. Former educator Josh Lauer received the Inspirational Faculty Award, recognizing the meaningful and lasting impression he has made on students and families throughout the years.

At the event, HDS announced its acceptance into a prestigious national endowment-building program through Prizmah: Center for Jewish Day Schools.
