Taking the crown, the name Liam has been the most popular name for boys since 2017 and Olivia has been the most popular name for girls since 2019 for the entirety of the U.S.
The name Liam has an Irish origin and means “strong-willed warrior” and “protector”. It’s also the shortened version of the name Uilliam in the Irish language which means “helmet of will”. As a direct descendant from the Germanic name William, Liam can be dated back to the Norman Conquest of England in 1066.
Whereas the name Olivia has roots in Latin meaning “olive tree.” It’s also the feminine equivalent of the masculine name Oliver, which is also very popular. Surprisingly, the name Olivia began appearing in 13th-century England and could possibly be attributed to a character in William Shakespeare’s play, “Twelfth Night.”
The name Olivia is also very popular in the entertainment industry with characters that include Oliva Benson, a detective on the show “Law & Order” and Olivia Pope, a political powerhouse on the show “Scandal.” Liam is also very popular with actors such as Liam Hemsworth, an Australian actor, and Liam Payne, a former member of One Direction making strides inside of industry.
