As much as we adore doing kid-friendly activities all the time, sometimes we’re looking for a break. There are two kinds of breaks that I like to take part in. The first is a break with my baby, where I get to do something that’s not necessarily kid related but I get to spend time with my daughter still. The second is a complete break where I do something for myself.
It can be hard to take time away from your little munchkins, but it’s almost important to do things for yourself. Depending on what type of break you’re looking for, this is the perfect guide for you.
With your kids
Especially now that the weather is warm, I like to spend some time outdoors. The University of Michigan Arboretum is the first place I go when the ground thaws. The peony garden is so beautiful and will be in bloom soon, but it also has nearly four miles of trails to explore, and there’s even a cute area where you can make houses for fairies.
You could also go to the Leslie Science and Nature Center, which has over 50 acres of land and is home to many plants and animals. You can tire your tikes out by letting them explore, and enjoy nature and animals while you’re at it.
There’s also the Domino’s petting zoo, though that is the most kid-like activity on this list, or the Creature Conservatory where you can meet unique creatures and learn all about them. If you’re an animal lover or simply looking for a reason to get out of the house, they’re great choices.
If you’re looking to have a drink while hanging with your kids, I’d recommend the Dexter Cider Mill or Babies and Brews. The Cider Mill has apple cider donuts, but you can also try a fleet of ciders or simply grab your favorite and sit outside.
Babies and Brews is free at Blom Meadworks with drinks available for purchase, and was created so that you didn’t feel isolated in those first few years of parenthood.

If you’re looking for a more active night out, you should try Decode Escape Room. There is one in Ypsilanti and one in Ann Arbor, and they have different cool rooms to explore. Grab a friend and try out whichever one peaks your interest. You can also try Lucky Strike, which has 26 bowling lanes, an arcade and a sports bar.
One that is a bit more of a commitment is the wellness centers in Dexter and Chelsea. I’m a member, and I use it to swim, spend time in the hot tub, and even hang out in the sauna. This does require a membership and an initial fee, so it’s not everyone’s first choice, but this is my number one escape since it’s health focused and gives me a chance to work out.
If you want a community feel, try Wolverine Pickleball. You can start as a beginner and learn a new game while meeting friends. Plus, it’s a way to stay active.
If you’re looking for something artistic, you should check out Spun in Kerrytown, or the Ann Arbor Art Center. Spun offers classes like Beginner Crochet, Knit a Steeked Sweater and What the Heck are Short Rows. The Ann Arbor Art Center has events like Open Figure Nude Drawing, Ladies Night Out Frames and the Bloom Into Season Art Shop.
You deserve a break. Take the time you need to fill your own cup so that you can be there for your kids. Whether its a break from kid activities or a moment to yourself, taking time for your own needs makes you a better parent.
