Ever wondered what it would be like to be a squirrel? Now you can appreciate the canopy from the perspective of our feathered and furry friends from 65 feet over a glacial kettle at the Reach for the Sky Canopy Walk at Hidden Lake Gardens of Michigan State University, 6214 W Monroe Road (Hwy M-50) Tipton.
Hidden Lake Gardens already contains captivating natural beauty, and the new Reach for the Sky Canopy Walk is an invitation to visitors to connect with nature and extend their experience deeper into the forest. The Gardens have six miles of paved trails you can drive on, so people with mobility challenges can still enjoy the natural world. The Sky Walk is a way to help visitors experience the place even further, connecting with hiking trails and the calm beauty of the temperate forest landscape.
“Our staff has been thrilled to hear how positively the public has received the new attraction,” said Jessica Goodrich, marketing and publicity coordinator of Hidden Lake Gardens of MSU. “Again and again, visitors seem to be in awe of the view, the surroundings, the workmanship, and the overall experience at the Sky Walk. We have even heard so many comment that even though they have a fear of heights, they felt safe and comfortable crossing.”
Multi-use pedestrian trail under construction
For those who use assistive devices or wheelchairs, a multi-use pedestrian trail currently under construction will improve access and accommodation and link with handicap parking spaces.
Visitors walking to the Sky Walk will also appreciate the easier conditions. While no completion date is set, but the hope is that it will be ready still this year. Check the Reach for the Sky Canopy Walk websites for any closures that may impact your plans, and then add it to your list of fall color viewing destinations.
The Sky Walk is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“Peak fall color typically occurs around mid-October,” said Goodrich. “September and October are a beautiful time to visit and experience the gorgeous fall days at Hidden Lake Gardens, especially out on the Sky Walk. Those that have already had the opportunity to enjoy the Sky Walk will find it to be a completely new experience this fall.”

Visitors can also enjoy other attractions at Hidden Lake Gardens, like the Conservatory and Bonsai Courtyard – a must see! The visitors center also regularly hosts art exhibitions, with the current focus on showcasing art made from debris collected from cleaning the River Raisin, so there’s something for everyone.
