On every single day of June, there’s something to celebrate Pride month. Want to make a tutu? Learn about queer history? Enjoy a gumball Pride necklace? The Ann Arbor District Library’s got you. Check out some of the family-friendly events we’re most excited about–and yes, there are some events just for grownups too!
Family events
A family-friendly art exhibit: “Love Makes a Family.”
This museum-quality traveling art exhibit, created of photos and interviews of families with a LGBTQ+ family member, seeks to “challenge and change damaging myths and stereotypes about LGBTQ people and their families”. There are two versions of this, one especially designed for younger children. It’s at the Malletts Creek Branch.
2. Gumball Pride Necklaces
This whimsical craft promises to be so much fun for children (and adults) ages preschool+! Join at the Westgate branch, June 20 for an hour at 6:30 p.m. to craft rainbow necklaces out of gumballs.
3. Drag Bingo
Open to all ages on June 23 from 3-4pm, you can join Drag Queen Jadein Black for Bingo with lots of music and prizes. This event is hosted at the downtown library.
4. Fairy Art: Enchanted Landscapes
What could be more magical than creating an art piece out of faux gold frames and layers of paper? Grades K-5 are welcome to explore the limits of their imagination with this craft on June 25, 11am-12pm, at the Westgate branch.
5. Yarn Wrapped Rainbows
If you have a child from K-5, come join to make a delightfully bright rainbow out of yarn, surrounded by fluffy clouds and hung by a string! This event is on June 28, 3-4pm at the Malletts Creek branch.
6. Make your own tutu!
If you have a princess of any gender who loves to twirl, this is the workshop for you. Preschoolers through 5th grade can use ribbons and tulle to create their very own custom tutu on June 28 at the Traverwood branch.

Events for grownups
“The Graveyard Closet: a Short History of Queer Horror Cinema with Dr. Sean M. Donovan”
Friday June 14, 6:30-7:30pm, join at the Pittsfield branch for a presentation that promises to be engaging, campy, and “wickedly informative”. The presenter, Dr. Donovan, has taught at the UM, curates queer experimental cinema for the Ann Arbor Film Festival, and has taught at the UoM.
“Juneteenth: The History and Aftermath of African American Women.”
This is not LGBTQ+ per se, but since intersectionality is essential to queer rights, it’s worth mentioning. On June 19 for an hour at 6:30 at the Westgate branch, join Professor Peter Boykin (a history professor) as he leads you through Juneteenth, with the abolition of slavery and how this holiday has supported African American people.
Drag King Revue
Local Drag Kings come in style for a night of performance and a panel discussion about drag king culture, the art form, and queer celebration. Hosted June 29, 6-7:30pm, at the downtown library.
