Whether your goal is to cure a mid-day craving or to provide a fun, inexpensive outing for your toddler, This and That has something sweet for everyone. The downtown Ann Arbor candy shop opened last July and is quickly becoming a favorite stop for students, local residents and area businesspeople. “It’s been going good,” said owner Andrea Graef, who opened the shop after working as a medical administrator and then in retail for several years. Graef also previously worked on disaster relief for the Red Cross.
So why a candy shop now? “It’s the memories,” she says, describing the joy and nostalgia customers experience as they find mom’s favorite candy or the chocolate bars grandma used to always have. “It can also be an inexpensive treat,” Graef explains, who says customers are welcome to come in and buy even just one Tootsie Roll. “It’s a simple pleasure in all these hard times,” she said.
This and That sells more than 300 varieties of candy including several different types of gummies, bulk chocolates and now harder-to-find items like candy buttons and Mary Janes. This and That also carries a number of Michigan-made treats including products by Sanders, Better Made, Detroit Popcorn Company, Plymouth Popcorn Company, Bizzy Lizzy Bakery and Zingerman’s. “I’ve lived in Michigan my whole life and I think it’s important to support the communities and the state that you live in,” Graef says. The shop also puts a fun spin on traditional gift baskets, like a nostalgic Wonder Woman lunch box filled with treats as a gift for mom or a candy bouquet instead of flowers.
Hours are Monday through Saturday 10am to 10pm, and Sundays noon to 8pm. This and That is located at 611 E. Liberty. 734-929-2999. www.thisnthatstuff.com
