The Real Men’s Project began in 2003 when Dani Meier cofounded the organization with the belief that it is men’s responsibility to end domestic and sexual violence. Meier, a Jackson based therapist, promotes the belief through area events, organizations and even a statewide photo contest inspiring fathers to teach their sons ‘real men don’t hit’ and to teach their daughters ‘real men don’t rape.’ “My focus had been on Father’s Day, and then the photo contest took off,” says Meier. The Father’s Day contest and exhibit featuring photos of Michigan dads with their children has been displayed in Jackson’s Allegiance Health System offices since last June. “This was such a great initiative that it only seemed natural to expand,” says Meier. The photos were gathered into a book, Real Dads: Men Embracing Nonviolence, the release of which will be celebrated on Saturday, June 4, from 2-3:30pm at The Crazy Wisdom Tea Room (114 S. Main St. 734-665-2757. www.crazywisdom.net) The book utilizes words and images to celebrate fathers who present positive role models for their children.
