For the better part of a week every year, downtown Ann Arbor transforms into a huge outdoor gallery for Ann Arbor Street Art Fair, with artists from around the globe and some of the area’s most beloved entertainers. This year’s incarnation kicks off with the Townie Party on Monday, July 15, on East Washington St. between Thayer and Fletcher and on Ingalls Mall from 5:30-9:30pm, where you and your family can stroll through the Kids’ Art Fair, which showcases the work of young artists in grades 3-8. The Fair officially opens on Wednesday, July 17, continuing through Saturday, July 20. Stroll past booths offering everything from museum-quality pieces to photography, jewelry, ceramic art, sculpture, mixed media, and more. In the Art Demo zone under the big maples on North University, you can watch artists at work on a huge variety of techniques. The demonstrators change every hour. In the Art Activity Zone on Ingalls Mall, kids and adults can try their hands at “Moneygami,” puppet-making, clay throwing, and more. Live performances happen on The Fountain Stage, including dance and music. And you won’t go hungry: Food booths will provide plenty of noshes and beverages to keep your energy up and your mood festive. Free.
