The best event of the summer to enjoy skating, eating, and music.
In celebration of its 5th anniversary, the Ann Arbor Skatepark is hosting a free event, Light Up the Park, on Sunday, June 23 from 11am-4pm. The event kicks off a fundraiser to purchase lighting for the park, needed especially for the shorter days of fall, winter and spring, to allow boarders, roller skaters and other athletes to fully utilize practice time as the park is open 6am-10pm daily, year round.
Expected attendees include professional skateboarders and athletes Ron Allen, Alec Beck, Andy McDonald, John Kelly, Gabby Rataiczak, and Janthavy Norton. The event is hosted by Friends of Ann Arbor Skatepark in collaboration with Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation and GIVE 365.
The morning program includes an all girls skate, with female athletes to support and instruct girls in skating skills. Representatives of The Tony Hawk Foundation and local politicians are on the schedule for 11am followed by DJ’s, food vendors and skateboarding competitions throughout the day. For a nominal contribution, your business can set up a display at the event.
Light Up the Park is the kickoff of an entire weekend of events, including the Detroit Riverside Park grand opening. Even if you aren’t inclined to show off your moves, come, eat and relax with your friends and family while watching professionals demonstrate their skills! The skatepark is located in Veterans Memorial Park at 350 N. Maple Road.
