Two local National Honor Society chapters have teamed up with the Sprout Love Initiative of the Cancer Support Community of Greater Ann Arbor to turn their Spring Fling family fun day fundraiser into a virtual 5K.

The Sprout Love Initiative is dedicated to raising money for the Cancer Support Community’s financial assistance program. Since its beginnings, the Sprout Love Financial Assistance fund has granted over $210,000 to families who are experiencing financial hardships as a result of their cancer. This assistance provides help with mortgages, groceries, and other basic needs.

Over the past four years, the Sprout Love Initiative has partnered with Dexter High School to help raise funds. This year is no different. The National Honor Society Students of Dexter High School have been working over the past several months with staff and volunteers from the Cancer Support Community to create the virtual 5K. This year, the National Honor Society at Skyline High School will join in to help raise funds.

To keep everyone on their toes, the students have also decided to add some competition to the event. The school that raises the most money will receive bragging rights and a trophy to display at their school. Additionally, individual racers have the chance to receive custom items. This includes custom hats, water bottles, t-shirts, phone chargers, and backpacks for hitting fundraising goals. However, Washtenaw County has great students and they’re all aware that this is not about the prizes, it’s about the community.

The virtual 5K will take place the week of May 16 to 23. The cost to participate is $25. Each race participant will get a race t-shirt and a Sprout Love sticker with their registration. All proceeds will go directly to the Sprout Love Financial Assistance fund.

Racers will be able to follow the race throughout the week through the event website. There, you can check out the race time leaderboard, race photo sharing, and a fundraising thermometer. The overall goal of the fundraiser is to raise $5,000.
