Kathy Scharp, a co-founder of the Ann Arbor Ballet Theatre, recently opened the Russian Ballet Theatre School. The school was formed with the intention of bringing the rich art of Vaganova Ballet to Ypsilanti and surrounding areas. The Vaganova style of ballet is a method of classical ballet that encourages the dancers to move with their entire body. “I want to make it accessible to those who really want to experience the beauty of ballet,” explained Scharp. “I wanted to spend more time doing what I love while teaching important themes such as loving discipline, slow but steady progress, and really applying yourself,” said Scharp,”For kids, I really want them to see the rewards after their hard work.” Scharp has an extensive background in the art of ballet. She served many years asthe Assistant Artistic Director and Ballet Mistress with The Ann Arbor Ballet Theatre. She has also received Russian method teacher training beginning in 1985 with Jurgen Schneider and other respected instructors.
The Russian Ballet Theatre School offers classes on Tuesdays and Saturdays for ages four and up at the Riverside Arts Center in downtown Ypsilanti. 734-262-5093. www.russianballettheatreschool.com
